Daily News:
* From Master Blacksmith Dale Morse :"I have finally got working forges at my school location and successfully had my first class this past weekend. We have had a lot of issues putting in the flues through the flat roof with all the snow that was up there. It is almost completely gone, thanks goodness, as leaking from the melt has been a serious problem. I am still working on getting the shop at home up and running, but I feel that I can resume articles for the newsletter. Also if you want to schedule a association event at the school, you are welcome to do so. Fred Crist is in the same building so some joint event may be possible." Note: we are scheduled for an Event at Dale's new location on May 8th.
* The Rose: We have all seen many fabulous demonstrations over the last 4 plus years and most were extraordinary in their ability to show case their mechanics and techniques in this blacksmithing craft. But after thinking and reviewing what Fred Crist did at the last event, particularly with his version of a metal rose, I’m in awe. Not only did he impress everyone with his skills in blacksmithing but took it to another level that I had never seen before and that was: to conceptualize what he wanted, but instead of a paint brush, paint and paper, he used iron, tongs, heat, anvil and hammer to create masterpieces; my favorite was the Rose. There is no doubt in my mind that he is an “Artist”.
* Morgan Coleman would like ODBSA to have a for Sale and/or Wanted Section on Web site. What do ya'll think? If there is enough interest, I'll see what I can do.

Gerald Boggs
April 24-25
9am-4:30pm Non-members $178/ Members $143
Never felt the vibration of hammer on hot steel? Discover the craft and art of blacksmithing by learning the skills and techniques of forging leaves.
Beginning to intermediate students will learn the art of creating leaf-design metalwork at the Jacksonville Center forge. Start by making a fire and learning to use the anvil. Before long, students will be forging their first leaves, discovering along the way blacksmithing techniques such as “drawing out,” “necking,” “spreading,” and “swaging.” Develop a feel for the anvil and hammer while adding details to the leaves. Expect to forge several styles of leaves, and forge weld them together into a bouquet or tree of life.
Beginning to Intermediate
Minimum Age: 18 Note: In the pasted ODBSA got a 25% discount off of the Non-member price. That works out to be $133.50 for the two days or $66.75 a day and that's a real deal. You can now register and pay on line. http://www.jacksonvillecenter.org/
* It has been confirmed:Old Dominion Blacksmith Association will demonstrate at the 34thAppomattox Railroad Festival on Oct 9th -10th. Charlie Boothe will again lead the way in this large event (40,000 plus). Last year both David Hinshaw and I assisted Charlie in this event
* Artist Blacksmith Fred Crist:Because of everyone's interest in the artistic side of blacksmithing at the last event with Fred, I've asked him and he has agreed to do another artistic blacksmith demonstration at his studio in Waynesboro next Feb. for ODBSA.
* From Ron Howard-- Re: ODBSA & the Jacksonville Center for the Arts
I am in support of Gerald's proposal as it is presented in the January 2010 Newsletter. I think it offers us (ODBSA) an incredible opportunity to do the very things ODBSA was created to do ... allow like minded people to get together and share in the knowledge and skills of Blacksmithing and to also promote the craft to the public. In my humble opinion, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our association and members.
Please count me in on July 17 for the BBQ Fundraiser. I'll be glad to participate in whatever role is needed.
Sincerely,
Ron Howard Note: Please let me know what you think? Bobby
I've been asked, why have I stopped teaching young people blacksmithing? I still teach them but only when the parent wants to learn also. My experience so far in teaching young people, without a parent learning also, is that the first thing that comes along them like football, girls etc they lose interest. In fact in two cases the parents and others build these kids a functioning blacksmithing shop and now it’s not being used. Now any parent that does not want to learn the craft with their child, they are given the information to the nearest professional blacksmithing school.
* Interested in teaching a young person Blacksmithing? I often get requests from parents that their child wants to learn blacksmithing. If you are interested in teaching any, please let me know and I will give them your e-mail and/or telephone #.
* Bog Iron from Dave Brown: Click "HERE" to read.
*From Bill Roy (IO) Passing along some blacksmithing information…
I found this 10 minute video on forge welding an axe head to be quite well done.
Our members and other OSBSA website visitors might find it interesting as well.
The link is on YouTube and available to anyone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCmuCP9DHUQ
And I’m sure David Robertson would appreciate the additional publicity.
* Member George Juettner wants to sell his blacksmithing equipment. He purchased it over the last three years and lives about 5 miles from me. I have nothing to do with this so please contact him directly by telephone for more information and/or delivery/ pick up info. etc Telephone # 434-376-7550
Photos and asking prices please check "HERE"
*From Bill Roy (Information Officer) Found more ideas for April, but might be too complex.
* From Bill Roy:"I have run across this fellow’s site a few times via eBay and IFI.I looked at his store, products, and projects pages.Maybe there are a few things we could make in April.http://www.civilwarblacksmith.com/
