* Looks to be the best attended Event of the year at the Buttercup Plantation this Sat. (38 as per Wed morning 11:00am) If you are planning on bringing a guest(s),spouse or your children, please let me know. Guests, spouses and children do not pay admission fee. We have 5 dogs, 2 cats, 5 roosters, two chickens, a swing and a gold fish pond etc to help entertain the ones that are not interested in the demonstration. My wife loves to talk and loves the company so bring you spouse. Besides that, I'm sure, she could would appreciate any help provided. Note: don't tell her that I said this.
* Member Mickey Surrett is bringing a truck load of used blacksmithing stuff to sale at this Sat Event.
* Members Richard and Mary Bartelt are back from their summer long trip out west. Looking forward to hearing all about it.
* A very old & unusual historic Trammel. This is ODBSA member John Buck's fireplace trammel that some of us first saw at the Jacksonville Center a few months ago. It's on loan to me and I will try to duplicate it after our Event this Sat. I'm leaving it on the front exterior wall of my shop for everyone in attendance at this coming Sat Event to see. Maybe some of you would like to try to replicate it also?
* Members/Guests who plan on attending our Sept. Event at
my Plantation Forge at the Buttercup Plantation in Long Island, VA on
Sat. 11th with one of our favorite personalities, Master
Artist/Blacksmith Billy Phelps. Billy is just a lot of fun to listen to
and learn from, so if you have the time, sign up and come on down to the
"suburb of the boonies" and enjoy the day with us.

* Congratulation to Ted Crockett on his new purchase. This historic forge (that I call a rivet ratchet forge) looks to be in really good shape. Ted just purchased this forge in Waynesboro, VA at an antique store and said that there is anther one similar to this one there. For more information you can contact Ted at wtcrockett@gmail.com .Ted is ODBSA photographer, one of the volunteer blacksmiths demonstrators at Clover Hill Village and an active Civil War Rein-actors, .
* How to make Charcoal in a Barrel: Charlie Boothe and I attending a class in Halifax at the Virginia Cooperative Extension on charcoal making on Thurs Aug.19th. Even though the class was geared toward larger scale charcoal making they did have a hand out of making it in a 55 gal barrel. ODBSA saw how Lee did it in March at his studio but this is somewhat of different way for you to try it. If interested please click on the following: "HERE"
* The Northern Rockies Blacksmith Association publish three Newsletter a year. I thought you might be interested in reading this fall issue because ODBSA Educational Director Master Blacksmith Dale Morse has an article reprinted in it. It's a very large file 5,819 kb. Click "HERE" to see & read it. Note: it was also printed in 2009 in the Illinois Valley Blacksmith Association newsletter. Way to go Dale!
* Check out Shenandoah Valley Blacksmithing Guild (SVBG) new Web Site http://svbg.squarespace.com It was designed and made by Dave McKennon (Temporary Editor & now Web Master). Some of you might remember Dave from our Event at Dale's school this year. He participated in hands on training with us. Congratulations to David for a well designed site and I'm sure that the membership of SVBG will love it. * The October 9th & 10th Event will be another hands-on demonstration to the Public by our members at the Appomattox Railroad Festival. Details are being worked out and will follow later.
